Our History
Willes Cultural Club: The Beginning
The story of the Willes Cultural Club began in 1992, a time when student clubs at Willes were absent despite the presence of significant student talent. Recognizing this “creative void”, a group of “visionary students and dedicated teachers united to ignite a movement”, leading to the simultaneous establishment of three clubs under the Willes United Club banner. Among these was the Willes Cultural Club, envisioned as a “beacon for artistic expression”. The founding moderator was Bimal Sir, who was later succeeded by Mumtaz Madam. Leading the club as its founding president was Sabbir Mahbub (Batch ’92). The initial team also included Mushfiq, Rajib, Zubayer, Sohel, Saimon, Sharif, and others whose contributions remain a vital part of the club’s legacy. As a “wing of United Club,” the Cultural Club quickly established itself as “a nucleus of celebration and competition”. A significant early achievement was the orchestration of the Willes Inter-School General Knowledge Competition in 1996, which saw participation from over 40 schools and was directed by the renowned quiz figure Dr. Nakib Uddin, marking it as a “landmark moment”. The period from 1992 to 2008 is characterized by “momentum, merit, and milestones,” establishing the club as “a cultural cornerstone of Willes” driven by “student initiative and enduring mentorship”.
After a period of dormancy, the club experienced a “renaissance” in 2013. This revival was guided by Asim Sir, Lucky Miss, and Shamoly Miss. Jarif Jalal (Batch ’14) took on the role of president, with Pranto Chakraborty (VP) and Sahil Aziz (Secretary) in support. A “resplendent inaugural ceremony” marked this new beginning. The club thrived with workshops, “vibrant fests,” and inter-school collaborations, including a 2015 science fair with the Willes Science Club, until 2018. However, facing silence once more, “revival efforts surged anew” in 2021, spearheaded by Imran Hossain Rumman and Yousuf Hyder Adib (Batch ’22), along with Tahia Mashiat, Mushfika Haque, and others. Their “relentless pursuit rekindled the club’s flame in 2022”, with Asim Sir returning as moderator, supported by Monika Miss and Mukta Miss. This latest era embraced both “offline tradition and online innovation”. Notably, in 2022, the club hosted “Shilposonghat 1.0,” its first virtual event, featuring distinguished guests such as Selina Hossain (President, Bangla Academy) and Ziaur Rahman (Founder, Shironamhin). Since then, the club’s legacy “has grown ever stronger”, and today, it “strides forward under the stewardship of Rozina Miss, sustaining structure, nurturing spirit, and elevating the proud pulse of Willes”.
The Fourth Era of Willes Cultural Club (WCC) is now praised as the most transformational chapter since the institution’s celebrated second renaissance, enriching what many already called a “rich tapestry of cultural brilliance.” Its momentum began on 4 June 2024, when the club’s Facebook page unveiled a newly elected panel helmed by Moderator – Roujeena Sultana Ma’am and Secretary – Mukta Rani Dey Sarkar Ma’am. Their very first act—entrusting Vice President (Administration) – Shehab Uddin Shammo with an online shading workshop—proved that distance could never stifle creativity: the segment’s gallery overflowed with artwork within hours. Even as July’s nationwide student movement disrupted classes, WCC members posted poems, songs, and illustrations online, and in August repurposed their talent to raise awareness and funds for flood‑relief efforts.Once school gates reopened, Recruitment 4.0 arrived with unprecedented energy. More than 160 new enthusiasts joined, and the ensuing orientation and farewell—managed by President – Arindam Bandya—became an instant legend. The evening featured dramatic performances, heartfelt tributes to outgoing seniors, and a show‑stopping rendition of “Amar Shonar Bangla” by Former Moderator – Asim Gomez Sir, whose voice drew a standing ovation. Days later, Musician & Executive – Farhad Diganta transformed the first in‑person guitar workshop into a rousing sing‑along. Meanwhile, Communication Secretary – Sheikh Nihat Ali steered a clay‑craft session whose sculptures later headlined WCC’s stall at January’s Youth Festival. Under festive lights, that stall—decorated with quota‑movement graffiti and heritage motifs, and serving aromatic tea with pithas—became the fair’s most photographed corner, joined by an open‑air concert and a live‑sketch marathon.
February 2025 lifted WCC onto a national stage. Club Representative & Public Relations Secretary – Kazi Muntazir Rahman Zarif forged a partnership with Notre Dame Cultural Club for the 9th National Cultural Jubilation (6–8 February). Day one featured a stirring duet by Farhad Diganta and Anirban Das; day two delivered show‑stealing solo dances from Sharanno Saha and Financial Secretary – Fairuz Farzan, followed by an enchanting puppet show from General Secretary – Samiha Arpita. The climax arrived when Farhad’s lightning‑fast instrumental guitar solo secured first prize, echoing through the NDC quadrangle. Hardly pausing for breath, WCC then commemorated International Mother Language Day on 21 February with the school’s largest Alpona in recent memory—designed by Sheikh Nihat Ali and overseen by Secretary Mukta Rani Dey Sarkar—where founding members of the second reopening knelt beside brand‑new recruits, painting motifs of “Ekush” unity. A week later, Samiha gathered members again, this time to master vocal mimicry, puppet manipulation, and the fine timing that makes each character come alive. WCC’s influence continued to widen. In March, the club co‑curated Dhaka College’s “2nd Lit & Cam Fest with Digital Art Camp,” showcasing experimental zines and short films. April saw WCC compete in Mohammadpur Government Cultural Club’s “1st MGCCC Cultural Fiesta 2025,” where, under Kazi Muntazir Rahman’s guidance, the team placed second runners‑up among 21 national organizations a victory that sparked spontaneous dancing in the venue foyer. On On the very first day of the Bengali New Year, Willes Culture Club set up yet another vibrant stall—this time celebrating the rich traditions of Bengali New Year itself.
Adorned with motifs rooted in Bengali culture, the stall beautifully captured the festive spirit of the occasion. It featured traditional face painting and showcased the culinary heritage of Bangladesh through a delightful array of local food items—familiar, everyday dishes that resonate deeply with our lives as Bengalis. As this era approached its conclusion, its momentum showed no signs of slowing. From contributing to every major cultural event at WLFSC to organizing mesmerizing programs, WCC stood at the heart of a cultural renaissance. Every performance resonated with the soulful voice of our Vice President (Workshops & Others), Sheikh Mehzabin Rubaba, who also played a central role in the club’s cultural operations.
The revolutionary spirit of this era was further strengthened by the Advisory Panel, whose insights and guidance helped shape strategic decisions and nurtured the next generation of leaders. Their involvement—both behind the scenes and on the front lines—ensured the panel’s consistent growth and success.
In every respect, the Fourth Era of Willes Cultural Club was a masterclass in cultural leadership, teamwork, and passion. This glorious chapter stands as a testament to what can be achieved when creativity is nurtured, dedication is shared, and vision is collectively upheld.
