The story of the Willes Cultural Club began in 1992, a time when student clubs at Willes were absent despite the presence of significant student talent. Recognizing this “creative void”, a group of “visionary students and dedicated teachers united to ignite a movement”, leading to the simultaneous establishment of three clubs under the Willes United Club banner. Among these was the Willes Cultural Club, envisioned as a “beacon for artistic expression”. The founding moderator was Bimal Sir, who was later succeeded by Mumtaz Madam. Leading the club as its founding president was Sabbir Mahbub (Batch ’92). The initial team also included Mushfiq, Rajib, Zubayer, Sohel, Saimon, Sharif, and others whose contributions remain a vital part of the club’s legacy. As a “wing of United Club,” the Cultural Club quickly established itself as “a nucleus of celebration and competition”. A significant early achievement was the orchestration of the Willes Inter-School General Knowledge Competition in 1996, which saw participation from over 40 schools and was directed by the renowned quiz figure Dr. Nakib Uddin, marking it as a “landmark moment”. The period from 1992 to 2008 is characterized by “momentum, merit, and milestones,” establishing the club as “a cultural cornerstone of Willes” driven by “student initiative and enduring mentorship”.
After a period of dormancy, the club experienced a “renaissance” in 2013. This revival was guided by Asim Sir, Lucky Miss, and Shamoly Miss. Jarif Jalal (Batch ’14) took on the role of president, with Pranto Chakraborty (VP) and Sahil Aziz (Secretary) in support. A “resplendent inaugural ceremony” marked this new beginning. The club thrived with workshops, “vibrant fests,” and inter-school collaborations, including a 2015 science fair with the Willes Science Club, until 2018. However, facing silence once more, “revival efforts surged anew” in 2021, spearheaded by Imran Hossain Rumman and Yousuf Hyder Adib (Batch ’22), along with Tahia Mashiat, Mushfika Haque, and others. Their “relentless pursuit rekindled the club’s flame in 2022”, with Asim Sir returning as moderator, supported by Monika Miss and Mukta Miss. This latest era embraced both “offline tradition and online innovation”. Notably, in 2022, the club hosted “Shilposonghat 1.0,” its first virtual event, featuring distinguished guests such as Selina Hossain (President, Bangla Academy) and Ziaur Rahman (Founder, Shironamhin). Since then, the club’s legacy “has grown ever stronger”, and today, it “strides forward under the stewardship of Rozina Miss, sustaining structure, nurturing spirit, and elevating the proud pulse of Willes”.
